Brief History of ASCII Code
- Origins and Early Development:
- In the 1960s, as computers began to communicate electronically, the need arose for a common character encoding format.
- Before ASCII, different computer manufacturers used their own character sets, leading to compatibility issues.
- In 1961, Bob Bemer of IBM proposed a common code, leading to the formation of the X3.4 committee.
- On June 17, 1963, ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) was approved as the standard.
- Initial Challenges and Revisions:
- Despite approval, ASCII didn't gain widespread acceptance due to IBM's use of EBCDIC (Extended Binary Coded Decimal Interchange Code) in its computers.
- Revisions were issued in 1965 and 1967 to improve compatibility.
- In 1968, U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson mandated that federal systems be ASCII-compatible.
- ASCII's Impact and Evolution:
- Originally developed for teleprinters, ASCII found broader application in personal computers (PCs) from 1981 onward.
- ASCII uses seven-digit binary numbers, representing 128 different characters.
- Its adoption paved the way for seamless communication across diverse computer systems.
